Sport and Physical Activity (Cambridge Technical OCR)

Who is the course aimed at?     

This course is attractive to students who:

  • Have an interest and enthusiasm for sport
  • Enjoy applying sporting theory to practical situations in performance and coaching
  • Enjoy discussing contemporary sporting issues
  • Are interested in a career within the field, such as personal trainer, sports management or sports development officer

The Level 3 Cambridge Technicals - Sport and Physical Activity is equivalent to one A Level.

What will you learn?     

  • Unit 1: Body Systems and the Effects of Physical Activity                                                      You will gain an understanding of the structures and functions of the key body systems (skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy), how these support and impact performance in sport and physical activity and the effects that physical activity, training and lifestyle can have on them. 
  • Unit 2: Sports Coaching and Activity Leadership                                                                You will gain an understanding behind the theory of what makes good coaches/leaders, exploring roles and responsibilities. You will plan and deliver a series of sports/activity sessions reflecting on your own practice and using this feedback to improve your performance as a sports coach/leader. 
  • Unit 3: Sports Organisation and Development                                                                    You will gain an understanding of the organisations involved in sport in the UK, their roles and responsibilities and how they work together. You will also gain an understanding of sports development, including the organisations involved, who sports development is targeted at and why, how sports development is carried out and how the success of sports development initiatives can be measured. 

 You will also study two additional units chosen by sixth form departmental staff.

How will you be assessed?         

Assessment is 42% external and 58% internal as follows:

  • Unit 1                                                                                                                                        Written external exam - 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Unit 2                                                                                                                                              Coursework marked internally and externally verified
  • Unit 3                                                                                                                                         Written external exam - 1 hour
  • Two additional units                                                                                                     Coursework marked internally and externally verified

How will you learn?       

  • Teacher led activities and interactive teaching introducing new material
  • Regular homework tasks to consolidate new material and production of assignments
  • The use of dedicated text books
  • The use of exemplar exam papers and mark schemes
  • The use of exemplar assignments and internet resources
  • Taking part in debate and discussion
  • Working in groups to solve problems and develop ideas
  • Develop analytical skill in response to live performance

Enrichment activities and independent learning?           

  • Opportunities to complete a Sports Leadership qualification (CSLA)
  • The Level 2 Certificate in Instructing Gym Based Exercise
  • Wednesday afternoon offers the opportunity for extra- curricular sport with an expanding list of fixtures and sports available

What or where next?    

Future opportunities for employment in the sector could include teaching, sport event management, leisure centre assistant and personal trainer.

Future opportunities to follow sports related courses at university or college include sports therapy, sports coaching, sport business management and teacher training.
